Youth and Parent Services
- YPS
Youth and Parent Services is a parent adolescent conflict resolution service which helps to resolve conflict between a young person and their parents that may, or has, led to a young person leaving home prematurely.
Youth and Parent Services has qualified counsellors who offer services through the Adolescent Mediation Family Therapy, a service is available to young people aged 10-25 years of age and the National Affordable Homeless Agreement, a service for young people aged 12-18 years of age.
The approaches utilized encompass office based counselling and mediation, outreach counselling and support, respite accommodation, advocacy, case management and engagement at school or a day program. Services are offered from a city office and outreach from Elizabeth, Salisbury, Tea Tree Gully, Christies Beach, Marion and Mt Gambier.
For a family to be accepted as a client there needs to be an imminent threat of homelessness to the young person, or homelessness could be a possibility for the young person in the future. That means that the young persons’ care giver may want the young person to leave home, or the young person has been running away, or there’s a fear that they may run away.
YPS aims wherever possible to restore young people home and helps families resolve conflict before a crisis develops, and a young person becomes homeless. If restoration is not possible, YPS works to ensure that the family reconciles to the extent that if the young person cannot reside at home they are able to do so whilst maintaining a supportive relationship with their family. To assist this process YPS works collaboratively with Ruby's
Family reconciliation is the intended outcome of all the services provided by YPS. Where, however, it is not appropriate for the young person to return home, the service attempts to ensure that they retain the emotional and financial support of their parents.
YPS is a voluntary service and therefore the families must be willing to attend counselling. Families cannot be compelled to attend counselling at YPS by a government or non-government body.
Clients
Clients are referred to the service by self-referral, schools, health and welfare services (including Child, Youth and family Services), community agencies and also any of the Gateway Services through the NAHA Program. Staff are available to talk with young people and their parents when they experience conflict that may result in homelessness.
The service also provides some preventative counselling where family conflict is the issue but which at that point is not likely to result in immediate homelessness..
