StreetLink Youth Health Service

Streetlink

 

Streetlink provides health services to homeless and at risk young people across metropolitan Adelaide either via the city office or in an outreach capacity.

The health needs of homeless young people include all normal adolescent developmental issues as well as mental health, drugs and alcohol and chronic problems associated with transient living.

Clients

Streetlink is funded to work with young homeless and disadvantaged people from 12-25 years of age (and their children) across metropolitan Adelaide.

Services

Streetlink works within a model encompassing a GP, nurses, social work, Drug and Alcohol counselling and family support, and independent living Skills and a Clean Needle Program.

A psychologist, mental health assessment and counselling, dentistry, Centrelink and Housing SA also operate clinics. The service works with The service has a base in the city where a medical clinic supports social work and counselling along with outreach across metropolitan Adelaide.

Streetlink offers counselling and advocacy, health checks, medical treatment, immunisations, well-baby checks, Alcohol and Other Drug and Outreach Services..

 

Streetlink maintains a holistic approach to health care, recognising the importance of physical, emotional and social needs.

The service works to support and advocate for the young people who use it. It maintains a commitment to the promotion of better health and harm minimisation through the provision of education, counselling and support.

Alcohol and Other Drug Services - Youth Services

Streetlink Youth Health Service offers a range of Alcohol and Other Drug services to work with young people, their children and families where the young person is homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness, socially isolated and or uses illicit substances or is deemed ‘at risk’ of illicit substance abuse.

These services have clear social health and holistic perspectives that include an appreciation of the physical, psychological, family, and social factors of the young person. Services include assessment, case management, withdrawal and relapse prevention, co morbidity, counselling and family therapy, education, needle exchange and outreach.

Police Drug Diversion Initiative (PDDI)

Detour is a program established to assist young people referred via the Police Drug Diversion Line to gain information and advice about drug use.

PDDI is a program established to assist young people referred via the Police Drug Diversion Line to gain information and advice about drug use.

Ideally this programme would hope to assist young people give up drug use but their main focus is encouraging young people to actively participate in the community and make informed choices in relation to drugs.

PDDI  is specifically targeted at homeless and at risk young people .

Independent Living Skills

Streetlink Youth Health Service has Counsellors/ support workers who offer case management to young people who are requiring support and skills as they move into independent living.  ILS is an outreach service that works young people with high and complex needs who are seeking to or have recently gained independent accommodation. The services offers both practical and advocacy support.  This program is not time limited rather it responds to identified needs and the developmental stage of the young person.

Clean Needle Program

Streetlink Youth Health Service offers a Clean Needle Program for any persons requiring this service. This service does not have any age restrictions. The aim of the program is to reduce the spread of blood-borne infections such as HIV, and Hepatitis B and C among people who inject drugs and the general community.

CNP provides a variety of needles and syringes, alcohol swabs and Sharps disposal containers, as well as education to clients on a range of issues including drug treatment, support services, safer injecting and blood-bourne infections.

Illicit Drug Strategy (NIDS)

Streetlink Youth Health Service offers a range of Alcohol and Other Drug services to work with young people, their children and families where the young person is homeless or at imminent risk of homelessness, socially isolated and or uses illicit substances or is deemed ‘at risk’ of illicit substance abuse.  Services include assessment, case management, pharmacotherapy, withdrawal support and relapse prevention, co morbidity, counselling and family therapy, community and one on one education and health promotion, needle exchange and outreach.  The service is provided within a clinic setting or via outreach.
