Young Carers Respite
UnitingCare Wesley Adelaide provides this service in the North and West Country Region of South Australia through the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre.
About the service
The Young Carers programme aims to support Young Carers at risk of prematurely leaving secondary education or the vocational education equivalent by helping them to better manage and balance their education while continuing their caring responsibilities.
It is a targeted measure and seeks to supplement existing programmes, not replace them.
The programme will benefit school aged young carers, mainly 18 years and under, with respite services.
Information, referral and advice services are available for all young carers up to and including age 25 years.
Service provides
- A single point of access for carers requiring information and options about respite
- Assessment of carer need
- Coordination of respite services
- Care planning
- An after hours service response for carers experiencing an emergency or crisis
- Referral to services
- Coordinate arrange and where necessary, purchase short term, emergency or occasional respite
- Emergency Planning for crisis situations.
Young Carers are able to access flexible hours of respite care. Direct respite care is provided by purchasing, organising or managing the delivery of packages of in-home care. Indirect respite services may be provided to meet the more immediate needs or circumstances that are putting the Young Carer at risk of leaving school.
Service delivery
Respite Services are either purchased through approved agencies or by trained UnitingCare Wesley Adelaide staff.
Who can access this service?
Young carers at risk of not completing secondary education or vocational equivalent due to the demands of their caring role are eligible for assistance, and who are:
• High school students
• Young carers completing secondary education at a vocational institution
• Primary school students and/or secondary carers, who also have extensive responsibilities within the family and have been assessed as also at risk of not completing their education because of their caring responsibilities.
All carers are assessed for eligibility and relative need.
