Mental Health Carer Advocacy Service
UnitingCare Wesley Adelaide has recently been funded through the Country Mental
Health Unit to provide Carer Advocacy Support Services to carers of people with mental illness. Funding
has also been received to provide respite support to carers of people with mental illness.
The funding is part of a range of new mental health strategies developed by the SA Mental Health Unit
to deliver increased and improved recovery focussed support service to mental health consumers and their carers.
The Carer Advocacy Support Service has a range of objectives to meet the funding requirements including:
- Individual support and advocacy to enable carers to better negotiate the service system and support them in dispute
resolution processes.
- Increased carer participation in care planning and treatment processes.
- Systemic advocacy to enable changes in the service system to respond to the needs of carers of people
with a mental illness.
- Formal evaluation of advocacy needs for carers of people with mental illness.
