UnitingCare Wesley
Adelaide

Date 03.05.04 Ref No. 1/05

3,000 Pokies is 3,000, (not 2461)

UnitingCare Wesley is deeply concerned by reports today that the State Government may be considering reducing the number of poker machines in South Australia by only 2461 machines, and not the 3,000 recommended by the Independent Gambling Authority (IGA) and promised by the Premier in February this year.

“We cannot believe that the State Government would discount the promise by 18%,” said Rev Dr Muirhead, Minister for UnitingCare Wesley. “The public of South Australia has been told that the IGA recommendation is for a reduction of 3,000 machines. We expect the intent of the IGA’s recommendation to be enacted and not compromised by administrative technicalities.”

UnitingCare Wesley knows that over 70% of South Australians believe that poker machines do more harm than good (based on Productivity Commission survey) and so are looking for clear action to reduce gambling harm.

“The current State Government has demonstrated a preparedness to reduce gambling harm, it would be tragic to see firm and reasonable action derailed at the last minute” Dr Muirhead added. “We will be looking for the legislation relating to poker machine numbers to be clear in stating that the reduction will be for 3,000 machines, and that the reduction will occur promptly”
