Volunteering for Lifeline

Between 180-220 volunteers ensure that the Lifeline phones are available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Volunteer management is directed towards providing benefits for all. A democratic, caring, informed, dynamic and cooperative environment is promoted. Volunteers are encouraged to belong, to feel competent and to contribute.

Volunteer Intakes

Lifeline runs a high quality, professional training program which consists of 20 weekly training sessions.

Training is conducted in February and June each year. Applications are available for new volunteers at our information sessions held in December/January and April/May. Contact Lifeline Administration staff for Information Session details on 08 8202 5820 (Mon to Frid 9.00am to 5.00pm) or email adelaide@Lifeline.org.au.

Ongoing training in social issues and advanced skills is also provided.

There is a career path for volunteers who are encouraged and supported to take on different roles within training and the supervision of teams.

Volunteer Roles

Volunteers can be involved in many different roles with Lifeline. Some examples of volunteer roles are:

  • telephone counselling

  • training coordinator

  • supervisor

  • administration staff

  • data entry

  • publicity

  • fundraising

What Lifeline Looks for in a Volunteer

If you’re interested making a real difference to people who are anxious, hurting or in crisis, we need to hear from you.

Lifeline has its own trainers and no prior counselling qualifications or training is necessary. The training program encompasses the skills and understanding needed to respond appropriately to callers.

We are looking for sensitive, motivated people with maturity and open minds who are willing to undergo training, grow and develop in the role and make an ongoing commitment to Lifeline.

It is important that applicants to Lifeline have the ability to relate to people with diverse values and experience. An accepting attitude which is affirming and non-judgemental is imperative.

Volunteers are required for week days, weekends and evenings.

Selection of Applicants

The nature and the demands of the service require that very careful attention is given to the selection of suitable applicants. Information sessions are held prior to all intakes of volunteers to enable interested persons to hear all about the role and enable them to make an informed decision. A job description and Application Form is available at the Information session.
