Summary:

Under the Guardianship & Administration Act 1993 the Board assists certain persons who due to mental incapacity are unable to look after their health, safety or welfare or manage their affairs. The Board can: appoint a guardian to make major decisions affecting a person’s care and welfare including health care; appoint an administrator of the financial/legal affairs; consent to medical/dental treatment where a person is not able to effectively consent themselves and do not have an appointed guardian or medical agent to do this; review and hear appeals against detention orders made by medical practitioners; under the Mental Health Act 1993 make a range of decisions/orders in relation to compulsory treatment of persons with a mental illness.
